1. Take your time to choose a suitable place to put your tent
Before setting up your tent, you need to make sure that you put it in a strategic spot that is intended to provide the most comfort during your time in the tent. There’s a lot of considerations going into this and it can vary depending on the area, time of year, and camping experience. Ultimately, keep these things in mind next time you pitch a tent to make sure you’re happy camping in the tent:
- A clear & flat area that will keep you level
- Consider the proximity to a bathroom (if you’re on a campground)
- White noise, like a stream, helps lots of people sleep
- Choose a spot with shade–the sun can really heat up a tent
- Use nature as a windbreak to keep your tent from moving all night
- If snow is present, avoid being under trees. The snow can easily descend and cause major problems
2. The right bedding for tents makes all the difference
Having comfortable tent bedding to sleep on is a huge factor that plays into our sleep quality while camping. There are a range of common options, primarily sleeping bags, air mattresses, cots, and sleeping pads. Both have their benefits and disadvantages, and sometimes you may even choose to combine two of the choices (sleeping bag and air mattress, for example).
The biggest thing to consider is the ability to keep you warm with your tent bedding, without making you too dry. That’s why it’s important to get one when you use a sleeping bag that’s designed for the temperatures you’ll be exposed to. Making sure you have enough space for everyone is also critical, nothing is worse than a twin bed for two people!
And don’t forget a good pillow on camping, please. When you try to sleep in an awkward position without it and wake up with neck pains, this comfort of our daily life can really put a damper on you. There are many cozy pillow camping choices that are lightweight for easy traveling with you.
For some extra tips on how to make a camp bed more comfortable, you can do a few things: minimize all kinds of drafts to keep you warm, add warm rocks under your blanket (heat them up by putting them next to a fire), and really try to spend some time choosing comfortable tent bedding that suits your needs – it will make a huge difference.
3. Take along some earplugs
If you need total and utter silence, earplugs will be a lifesaver. The noises that you hear while camping can become freaky and frequent (not just from the wilderness, but fellow campers as well), and be able to bypass that is great all together. This is really the only way to get rid of the noise, and they’re so cheap it’s a no-brainer!
But just don’t forget to bring in enough pairs. Most earplugs are used once, and it would suck to make use of them and run out (I certainly don’t speak from experience).

If you use an eye mask at home, the same benefits apply when camping out. If you want to sleep in past sunrise sometime (which is particularly apparent while in a tent), being able to slip on a black-out eye mask before going to sleep will allow your body to sleep a little longer in the morning.
5. Keep your things dry
Holding your tent dry is a tough task to do when it rains. Besides having a quality tent that can withstand rain, it’s also important to help your tent fight off the wet conditions.
For example, it’s a must to ensure you don’t suck in dirt and water as you walk in and out of your tent. My favorite strategy is to carry a plastic tray for bringing in any wet shoes or clothes to keep it protected from getting anything else flooded.
Secondly, create a canopy with tarps over your tent designed to wash away the water from hitting your tent. The best tip here is to make sure that the canopy lowers the water 5 + feet away from your tent; otherwise, you’ll end up with water running through your tent’s bottom seams and drying it out.
6. Alternatively, blackout your tent
Personally, I just don’t like wearing eye masks. Alternatively, I find it comforting to block the sun by black-out my bed.
My favorite thing to do is to take a blanket in an emergency and put it over your bed. It takes the heat away from your tent, makes it cooler and doesn’t let light in. Conversely, building a canopy with some tarps over your tent will provide shade for your tent, effectively providing similar results.
7. An alarm clock
I know what you are think……
Why would I want this, exactly?!
Okay, what if you want to wake up at some point to do some scheduled activity; but you wouldn’t wake up without it because you blacked out your bed. It’s a lifesaver, and when you’re matching a good travel alarm clock to wake you up with those other comforts on time, you won’t wake up until you want them to.
8. Air conditioners & Heaters
Companies have really brought home the feeling of camping comfortable with portable tent heaters or air conditioners. You can keep your tent at a comfortable temperature now regardless of your fire-making skills.

9. Radio for white noise
Let’s say you can’t find water in the area, or just don’t want to set up camp near a stream. If you’re the type of person that could really benefit from white noise, you might consider bringing in a battery-powered radio.
You will not only be able to get some white noise throughout the night, but you will also get to rock out during the daytime.
10. Dress up (your tent) to impress
Wearing bedside clothes can be a great way to improve your overall nighttime comfort. It would be almost a must if it is particularly cold out. It can also be a great way to reduce the amount of gear you need to pack and bring along on your journey, keeping your load light.
My suggestion is to bring any night time clothes that aren’t worn during the day if you do this though. Such garments should be isolated from all of your clothing and should not be exposed to the outside. If they are, you risk collecting pollen during your trip and causing allergies. You’re going to pick up pollen, dirt, and who knows what else on your clothes if you’re out all day (which, I hope you are if you’re camping). It is not good to go to sleep in that at night, especially if you have allergies. So be prepared, and have an outfit for sleep only!
